Bringing residents, providers, and community partners onto one shared path to care.
Why Connection Matters in Pitt County
Pitt County residents face a combination of significant substance use challenges and broader social and economic barriers that can make it difficult to find and access the right support. The data highlights both the urgency of the need and the range of factors that influence health and wellbeing across the community.
The first chart shows Pitt County's relative burden of drug overdose deaths. Between 2016 and 2023, Pitt County ranked 49th among North Carolina counties for drug overdose death rates, with a rate of approximately 32 deaths per 100,000 residents. This places Pitt County among counties experiencing a substantial overdose burden and reinforces the importance of timely access to substance use treatment, behavioral health services, recovery support, and other community resources.
The second chart demonstrates that the need extends well beyond substance use. While 76% of residents are connected to tobacco use resources or services, other major areas of need include suicide (65%), reading/literacy (65%), prenatal care (65%), and life expectancy (62%). Overdose deaths themselves affect 54%, while unemployment (10%), severe housing needs (12%), transportation (15%), binge drinking (24%), and HIV diagnoses (26%) represent additional challenges that can influence a person's ability to access and benefit from care.

What This Means for Pitt County
Together, the charts illustrate why improving access cannot be limited to simply providing more services. People need an easier way to find the right support across the many issues that affect their health and their lives. A resident seeking help with substance use may also be facing transportation barriers, housing instability, mental health concerns, unemployment, or challenges supporting a family member.
That is where a locally connected network becomes important. AccessMeCare™ can help residents move more easily from need → connection → support, while helping providers, peer support specialists, and community organizations create a more coordinated pathway to care.
AccessMeCare™ connects Pitt County residents, families, and care professionals to mental health and substance use support through a coordinated network.
